Is a Pivot Really a Pivot?

You would be hard pushed to find an obvious link between philanthropy and construction. Yet when I look back across my career, I see one constant thread, even as the work itself has changed.

Getting ambitious projects over the line has always made me tick.

The grounding that stayed with me

Earlier in my career, working within CSR and philanthropy, the focus was always people. Reading situations. Understanding the need. Creating partnerships that would genuinely help.

I have always found my purpose in work by making a tangible difference, often behind the scenes and often against the odds.

That grounding has stayed with me.

Years later, running a small business of my own, I sometimes reflect on how those early lessons show up now. On the surface, the work looks very different. Homes. Interiors. Renovation. The context has shifted, but the core thread is the same.

Meeting people when life feels complicated

At Queensdale, we often meet members at points when life feels complicated.

A home devastated by a fire. A family home being rebuilt after a separation. A house that needs redefining after the loss of a loved one. A renovation where contractors are pushing their luck and the extras are quietly stacking up. A home that needs rebuilding in more ways than one.

Queensdale exists to support people through those moments.

To open doors. To share access. To remove the unnecessary barriers in an industry that has often felt closed unless you had the right budget or the right contacts.

What "pivot" really means

Pivot has become a buzzword associated with change. But when I reflect on what the word actually means to me, the answer is closer to the opposite. The pivot is the basis from which you move. It is about knowing and staying true to your core values and strengths.

You can only pivot if you know what you stand for.

For me, that shows up in how we work at Queensdale. In how we listen, and how we read between the lines. A home is never just about interiors. It is about stability, confidence and a sense of control. A home supports you when life feels uncertain, and our role is to support the people creating it.

Different chapters, the same core threads

As the year draws to a close, I feel grateful to have been able to pivot our business on the basis of strengths that have held true across very different chapters. In the City. In small business and charities. And now as a founder.

The values that resonated with me early on still guide the work I do today. Just expressed in a different way.
